“Free speech is more important”, said Samuel Chapman in the comments under my post here, then he proceeded to block me because I said that responsibility is attached to free speech... Oh, well, ciao ni’.
I absolutely get it - and I'm so, so sorry to see you leave. 😔
(I hear beehiiv is terrific and I've seen a few friends head in that direction these last few days, if that's any help. And I don't think any of us would begrudge being imported into a new platform enmasse. I would absolutely do that, yes - we signed up to read your words, and that will not have changed even if you're elsewhere.)
Sorry to see you go, I know it's a legit hit to leave this platform. As for importing email addresses, part of Substack's proposition is that you are always free to leave. So you are absolutely in your rights to import their email address wherever you land. Indeed, I could argue that you owe your readers the courtesy of importing their email addresses wherever you go. They signed up for you, not Substack! All the best in your new journey.
I would not have a problem being imported. A heads up at that point would definitely be considerate so everyone knows and people can unsubscribe if they want. It is sad, what is happening, and sad to see the band break up but also understandable. All the best. E Buon Natale
Giorgio, i am so glad to have “met” you here and I look forward to seeing your words in my inbox from wherever you land. Magari ci incontriamo per un caffè la prossima volta che vengo a Roma...
Totally understand! And please keep me on the list :) You can import the readers and then send out an email with the new system and explain what changed. If they want, they can unsubscribe (but why would they?!)
Wix can give you what Substack has regarding a blog, email functionality and subscription programs. You have way more control, but it's a lot of work. The most important things Substack gives you are discoverability and interaction.
Regarding discoverability, make sure you have a website and work on SEO. It took me about 3 months for my website to rank high enough to match Substack's ranking - lately it's far surpassed it.
For interaction, I'd recommend another social media site. Your work would translate brilliantly to TikTok. You can also build your community on your website.
Good luck! And if you want to bounce any ideas around, I'm here :)
Ooof! Thank you for this post. I completely missed the issue and the response from Substack. What utter rot. I'm going through the list of Substack creators who support Substack's position so I can unsubscribe. I look forward to your posts and am happy to follow you wherever you go. Another creator that I just started to follow -- OKDoomer -- has migrated from Substack to Ghost. She mentioned in a recent post that Ghost has the option to bulk import subscribers, paid and unpaid, from Substack to its platform.
I commend your principles, Giorgia. Brava! I will miss reading your writings. Please do transfer the subscription list once you get yourself set up on a new platform. Wishing you better things in 2024.
Free speech comes with responsibilities, too. Moreover, I never asked to silence anyone, I merely questioned the appropriateness/correctness in profiting off neo-nazis monetising on this platform, which according to its guidelines claims to be against hate speech, discrimination against minorities and violence.
They decided that money is more important than integrity, and I decided not to partake in this.

What Mike said! (although beehiiv has some quite bizarre moderation policies of its own - albeit in the opposite direction to Substack)
Look forward to reading your stuff. Don't really care where it's being sent from. :)

*Giorgia 😅
I´d be happy if you exported your subscribers. Do let us know where you end up so we can follow.

I’m so sorry to see you go, but I completely understand why you are going.
I will follow you to wherever you choose to land & maybe one day we can meet in real
life in Rome (or Venice!)
That really sums it up. So well put. Please do import my subscription wherever you go. Buon Natale!
